Calvin Luo S/S 2018 – Review
INSPIRED BY: The dreamy Lisbon sisters of Sophia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides. Think a modern update on the three showbiz girls clawing their way to the top in the Big Apple in Jacqueline Susann’s classic, Valley of the Dolls.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Kendall Jenner with Caitlyn and Kylie pondering their next big-ticket purchase during a leisurely afternoon out at the Rodeo Drive Concours d’Elegance car show in Beverly Hills.
WEAR IT TO: Your job interview at celebrity haunt Marie Robinson Salon, before heading downtown to catch a live indie band with the cool kids at Pianos on Ludlow.
FIRST READ: Deconstructed shirts, sheer dresses, knitted gowns with raw-edge trail detailing and mesh looks played to the show’s skater, athletic vibe. Luo also offered up a series of looks catering to the West Village socialite via a series of denim separates, ruched dresses with lace trim, and fitted parkas with frills.
BEST LOOK: A black bralette worn with a fitted skirt with champagne chiffon paneling, teamed with a cropped bolero in taupe and a black choker. Another standout was a red ruched dress with a built-in hood.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Preshow, designer Luo showcased models in pajama-style getups made from color-change heat-reactive fabric. Model Deion Smith put his skateboard prop to use via zigzag on four wheels through the crowd in transparent white knitwear.
SPOTTED IN THE FROW: Maria Waugh, Jixxy Gragel, Duke Ihenacho, Omar Bolden, Sunny Cai, Han Han, Chime Dolker, Austin Feng, Chris Lavish, Michaela Dosamanets.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “I can’t decide if this collection is more Jaden Smith at the club or Rihanna on a press junket.”
COLOR WHEEL: Taupe, champagne, black, blue, white, black, dust pink, denim, brown, red, yellow.
