Discount Universe NYFW S/S19 – Review
INSPIRED BY: Bold feminism, gender equality and the desire to make a splash via a glitter explosion on the runway.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Katy Perry’s wardrobe for the filming of her cover of Madonna’s Like a Virgin album, updated with a resistance slant.
WEAR IT TO: The after-after party following the Women’s March in lower Manhattan, hosted by Brooklyn’s eclectic House of Yes.
FIRST READ: Design duo Cami James and Nadia Napreychikov delivered a mash-up of 90’s neon dresses, 80’s prom-style polka-dot frocks and strapless jumpsuits, and red-carpet ready sheer cocktail gowns featuring words such as, “Not Your Baby,” “Not for Sale,” and “Irrational.” Not intended for shrinking violets, the kaleidoscopic lineup sported sequins or ruffles in almost every look – think Libertine-meets-The Blonds.
BEST LOOK: A halter-neck red velour ribbon dress with strategic cutouts and multiple bows, teamed with fluffy hotel slippers, also worn throughout.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Sparkly stockings, pro-feminism slogans and motifs, rosary beads, logoed ribbon, 80’s silhouettes, and sequins to the power of 48.
SPOTTED IN THE FROW: Marilyn Rondon, Lion Babe, Kitty Cash, Olivia Rouyre, Sami Miro, Sixtine Rouyre, Cipriana Quann, TK Wonder, Sophia Hadipanteli, Tammy Hembrow, Ruth Gruca, Carrington Durham, Shaena Baddour, Matthew Sosnowski, Jennifer Grace, Jovel Ramos.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “I feel like I’m in at an X-rated high-school dance right now.”
COLOR WHEEL: Hot pink, red, silver, yellow, blue, magenta, purple, black, green, orange.
