Snow Xue Gao NYFW S/S19 – Review
INSPIRED BY: The elite ladies of Hong Kong in the 1960’s. Designer Snow Xue Gao used the site of his show – Cantonese restaurant Jin Fong in Chinatown – as key behind the mashup of prints and fabrics, set against a makeshift gaming parlor.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Keira Knightly given a makeover by a design team comprising a librarian and your grandma.
WEAR IT TO: High tea opposite Central Park at the Plaza Hotel’s regal Palm Court.
FIRST READ: Ladylike dressing fusing Western and Eastern influences – double-breasted blazers, luxe silk scarves featuring floral prints, linen strappy dresses folded down to reveal silk slips underneath, and clashing patterns fashioned onto the same neutral separate. The mix shouldn’t have worked, but did.
BEST LOOK: A brown blazer worn with a matching skirt and peekaboo violet silk slip underneath, styled with a white and crimson necktie and a second sporting a geometric pattern.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Guests entered via an escalator to find models playing mahjong, seated around small card tables. Also key were silk strips fasted around the laces of Dr. Marten’s flat brogues, lacy black gloves and opulent long strands of pearls.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “If I wasn’t fasting this week I’d suggest dim sum on the way out.”
COLOR WHEEL: Mustard, brown, lavender, yellow, crimson, grey, blue, green, apricot, red.
