Prabal Gurung NYFW S/S19 – Review
INSPIRED BY: Designer Prabal Gurung’s hometown of Nepal, namely the Tharu indigenous people of the southern foothills of the Himalayas.
POP-CULTURE NOD: The final two contestants on So You Think You Can Dance performing a samba routine to Aladdin’s “A Whole New World.”
WEAR IT TO: The VIP opening of the 20,000-square-foot pop-up Color Factory museum in Soho to view the 265 different hues corresponding to moments encountered by the initiative’s creative team while exploring the borough.
FIRST READ: With flags strung across the roof of the Spring Studios location, Gurung focused on delivering an inclusive collection with a distinct athletic vibe – think color blocked Latin dance skirts, fit-and-flare bodycon dresses, tie-dyed tops and hoodies, relaxed resort suiting for men, and a string of dresses in tribal prints.
BEST LOOK: A fitted Kelly green tank dress featuring balloon detail at the hip, styled with black slides. Also key was a bright yellow pantsuit featuring a blazer with oversized cuff detail, worn with green sandals.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Feather accents on a sporty double-stiched midi skirt, jewel and beading embellishments on orange wrap skirts, leaf prints on hooded anoraks.
SPOTTED IN THE FROW: Tiffany Haddish, Karreuche Tran, Victor Cruz, Kelly Rowland, Debby Ryan, Caroline Vreeland, Huma Abedin, Camila Mendes, Yolanda Hadid, Indya Moore, Daya, Heart Evangelista, Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Bella Heathcote, Elaine Welteroth,
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “This is the first show I’ve seen this week celebrating color. I swear everything else has had more salmon than a seafood restaurant.”
COLOR WHEEL: Neon yellow, fuchsia, blue, tangerine, taupe, red, white, orange, purple, cerulean, chartreuse, lemon sorbet, charcoal, black.
