Angelika Film Center – The Lowdown

With the shuttering of Sunshine Cinema in the Lower East Side in January, the Angelika remains one of the few surviving indie art houses in Manhattan. Opened in 1989 in Soho, the cultural mainstay is a beloved neighborhood cornerstone. It shows a diverse mix of independent, limited release, and foreign films in an intimate setting, with the occasional flashback iconic number or director Q&A. Don a beret and assimilate into the mostly-NYU crowd, or find a friend to engage in a fierce intellectual debate at the adjacent café. Cool off by heading across West Houston for a frozen margarita at Mexican bar and eatery, Dos Caminos, after the credits roll.
