Tibi NYFW F/W19 – Review
INSPIRED BY: A sense of insatiable curiosity, designer Amy Smilovic took a childlike-approach to refreshing the heritage brand, with a focus on exploring new silhouettes and luxe modern details.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Olivia Palermo taking a break from being a street-style icon to debrief on fashion week with friends over cocktails and espressos at Sant Ambroeus in the West Village.
WEAR IT TO: Turn heads on casual Friday while mulling over leaving your stuffy corporate law job for a gig in the West Chelsea gallery scene.
FIRST READ: Smilovic expanded beyond her wheelhouse of in-demand smock dresses in pastel hues via plays on proportion and adding intricate details to wardrobe staples. Think oversized shoulders on menswear blazers, paired with barely-there mini shorts, deconstructed convertible trench coats, and a cozy v-neck knit with a built-in turtleneck, paired with a crocodile leather pencil skirt.
BEST LOOK: A mint button-down dress featuring glistening sequin sleeves seemed fit for an under-the-sea urban warrior, while an ivory midi frock covered in a polka-dot pattern could easily function as a laid-back wedding gown or a workwear staple – a quality much admired by Tibi clientele.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Monochromatic sculptures in the center of the runway that served as a subtle nod to a kid’s playground, ‘90s-style Chelsea boots, chain-belt bags and thin belts, doubled round at the waist. Smilovic introduced menswear this season, namely via a range of ribbed knits, jeans, leather blazers and pants, styled with unisex flip-flops or high-top white sneakers.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “I’m going to be in trouble very shortly as I need everything in this show.”
COLOR WHEEL: Apricot, gray, black, white, mustard, aqua, charcoal, taupe, maroon, ivory, brown, blue, purple, tan, green, mint, baby blue, lilac.
