Central Park – The Lowdown

Even the most jaded New Yorker holds a special place in their heart for Central Park – an 843-acre oasis smack bang in the center of Manhattan. Extending between 59th and 110th streets, the park is frequented by a mix of tourists, runners, cyclists and Upper West Side nannies pushing tots in designer prams. The landmark delivers a different experience at the turn of each season: think ice-skating to Christmas carols in Winter, mountains of orange and amber leaves dusting the ground come fall, lithe hipsters tanning on Sheep Meadow in summer, and hundreds of thousands of tulips and daffodils blooming in spring. In addition to ball fields, a John Lennon memorial called Strawberry Fields, the park is home to a state-of-the-art zoo with a sea lion pool in the center courtyard. The broader surrounds have been the venue for more than one hundred movies since 1908, including Maid in Manhattan, Friends With Benefits, When Harry Met Sally, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Grab a drink by the water at The Loeb Boathouse, then enjoy a hike up the unofficially-dubbed “Confession Hill” – the adjacent East Drive track snaking north – when its not uncommon to hear New Yorkers venting about their latest relationship/career/apartment woes.
