3.1 Phillip Lim NYFW S/S20 – Review
INSPIRED BY: Designer Phillip Lim channeled the industrial aesthetic of his show’s surrounds as key behind his pared-back offering, noting that a sharpened focus on sustainability continues to drive his measured approach to design.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Neo from The Matrix’s life as a graphic designer after hanging up his combat boots and retiring from a life in the underworld.
WEAR IT TO: A corporate meeting to discuss the specifics of your client’s upcoming Vogue cover before heading for drinks at Balthazar.
FIRST READ: Leather was key in this edgy collection: think zip-up hoodies, structured blazers and joggers with ruching at the ankle. One-shouldered dresses with drawstring detail and a lightweight knits worn with white Bermuda shorts added a dose of lightness and simplicity to the mix. With fellow designers Prabal Gurung and Jason Wu in attendance, you can be sure Lim delivered what the brand’s devotees crave: modern separates with an urban aesthetic, capable of being worn to the office or night out, and everything in between.
BEST LOOK: A sleeveless blue blazer with a detachable taupe collar, worn over a drop-waist silk midi skirt and styled with flat patent ankle boots.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Leather bandannas and neck ties, boxy totes and fanny packs, paneled bucket totes, fish-bone-style earrings, and statement neckpieces in silver and gold. SPOTTED IN THE FROW: Victor Cruz, Karrueche Tran, Jason Wu, Kehlani, Danielle Lauder, Prabal Gurung, Liya Kebede, Wen Zhou, Calvin Wang.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “Do you think it will take as long to get back to the city as it did on the way here? You’re lucky you live in Brooklyn.”
COLOR WHEEL: Mustard, rust, black, white, olive, yellow, taupe, blue, charcoal, navy, green.
