Tomo Koizumi NYFW S/S20 – Review

INSPIRED BY: Designer Tomo Koizumi’s desire to entertain through fashion and bring joy to fans of his groundbreaking designs. Like last season, he staged his show in the basement of Marc Jacobs’ store on Madison Avenue to a crowd of packed crowd, featuring a single model – 18-year-old trans model Ariel Nicholson – who changed in and out of each look in front of attendees with the help of assistants.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Kendall Jenner breaking the internet while dressed as a fairytale princess cake for the September issue of Paper magazine.
WEAR IT TO: Ensure you’re rid of any annoying neighbors in your front-row seat at the Grammy’s, where you plan to nab best pop single.
FIRST READ: Koizumi presented eight looks comprised of reams of ruffled Japanese polyester organza in a kaleidoscope of sherbet hues. This season, however, he showed a few in monochromatic black and white, perhaps catering to an extroverted bride-to-be? Dresses featured cocoon structures on the back, or train detail, with bows adorned allover, added a sense of romantic whimsy to the fantastical lineup.
BEST LOOK: An electric blue creation covered in in organza ruffles, graduating to cornflower, light blue and purple tones and covered in matching bows.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “Did you see Sabrina Sato in one of his gowns while hosting Vogue’s Brazil Ball earlier this year? She rocked it.”
COLOR WHEEL: Aqua, purple, blue, green, lime, yellow, magenta, lavender, lilac, orange, red, apricot, pink.
