Gabriela Hearst NYFW S/S20 – Review
INSPIRED BY: The Uruguayan designer’s focus on sustainability was front and center at the show, which marked the first ever carbon neutral one of NYFW. Hearst enlisted climate change advisory shop EcoAct to size the offset amounts necessary to balance her carbon footprint, then donated the balance to Hifadhi-Livelihoods Project in Embu and Tharaka Nithi Counties of Kenya.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Priyanka Chopra debating the issues after catching a seminar at the Google climate change conference in Sicily.
WEAR IT TO: A working breakfast at plant-centric café The Butcher’s Daughter in the Lower East Side, before heading uptown to the 92nd Street Y to chair a panel discussion as part of the annual Social Good Summit.
FIRST READ: Hearst delivered a series of classic evening and daywear looks with a focus on smart tailoring, opening the show with a string of cocktail frocks featuring macramé panels and utilitarian silhouettes. Adding a sense of femininity to the mix were halter maxi dresses with geodes built into the neckline via intricate crochet detail, while paneled, patchwork linen strappy dresses and an array of modern suiting added a dose of timelessness and wearability to the collection.
BEST LOOK: An orange tank dress, featuring floor-length flyaway detail fashioned from recycled fabrics and styled with sandals.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Jewel-toned geodes and agates adorned several looks on belts and as part of the clothing, while bags made from crochet cashmere and woven hemp played to the designer’s focus on sustainability. Guests were treated to a silk scarf covered in a print featuring extinct insects.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “Do you think we’re allowed to grab something from the farm-to-table bounty before the show starts?”
COLOR WHEEL: Orange, saffron, Kelly green, navy, white, cream, black, fuchsia, powder blue, magenta, yellow, taupe, red, brown.
