Tom Ford NYFW S/S20 – Review

INSPIRED BY: Citing the need for pause amid the chaotic new cycle as key behind his sharpened focus on simplistic elegance, designer Tom Ford paid homage to a ‘60s photo of Edie Sedgwick, Chuck Wein and Andy Warhol as an influence behind his decision to host the show on an abandoned subway stop on the J/Z line at the Bowery station.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Kristen Stewart hosting the MTV Video Music Awards with Harry Styles.
WEAR IT TO: Accept the gong for top femme fatale at the Glamour Women of the Year awards, before heading to a night of clubbing at Le Bain’s rooftop pool party.
FIRST READ: Even underground, bathed under pink light, Ford’s latest collection was clearly designed for sultry summer nights. The show opened with a series of duchesse satin ball skirts, worn with basic, slouchy tees, followed by oversized menswear blazers paired with elastic-waist micro shorts and knee-length versions. Ford’s leather offering was strong: think edgy moto jackets and athletic bombers, while a string of racy bralettes and bodysuits with strategic cutouts are sure to be snapped-up by front-row guest, Miley Cyrus, before the ink’s dry on her divorce.
BEST LOOK: A fuchsia satin blazer, worn open over a black tee and with matching jersey basketball-style shorts, front seam black tights and open-toe metallic green pumps. Also key was a statement orange peacoat, style with blue heels.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Metallic footwear added a dose of Studio 54 bling to the jewel-colored collection, paparazzi-shielding shades styled with double-breasted trenches, and baseball caps adding a street style vibe to a Grecian blue jumpsuit.
SPOTTED IN THE FROW: Anna Wintour, Naoki, Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zoe, Derek Blasberg, Diane von Furstenberg, Glenda Bailey, Julia Roitfeld, Amber Valletta, Nina Garcia, Joan Smalls, Russell Westbook, Elizabeth Saltzman, Jefferson Hack, Miley Cyrus.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE:
“Only Tom Ford could successfully stage a fashion show in a subway station.”
COLOR WHEEL: Rose, orange, black, white, blue, lavender, blush, sand, fuchsia, apricot, lilac, pink, purple, lime, green, brown.
