SHOW: By Johnny – Resort 2017
LOCATION: Blacksmith’s Workshop, Carriageworks
DATE: May. 17
START TIME: 11AM
TOP INSTA LOOK: Ruffles and oversized voluminous tiers were the play of the day, while wheeled plastic accessories by Joag Vaz – mismatched earrings and bracelets – echoed the minimalist theme. Proving racing season-ready were clutches featuring flowers inspired by Liberty of London.
BEHIND THE SCENES: Guests admired the enormous space of the Blacksmith’s Workshop, which featured rows of chairs around the perimeter and a giant inflatable igloo at the end, from which the models emerged.
OFF PROBATION: A deep-V strappy layered dress with printed black-and-white pleats, worn with black heels, oversized hipster shades and an oversized hoop earring, worn throughout on models’ right ears.
GOOD BEHAVIOUR BOND: Butter wouldn’t melt on a sweet polka dot dress with off-the-shoulder sleeves and ruffled skirt, a throwback to the 50’s ala Sandy from Grease (before she toyed with the dark side).
INSPIRED BY: The model’s catwalk briefing: “Beautiful, strong, fast, no stopping,” of which the same could be said about the designer’s resort 2017 collection, with each pretty frock or flattering piece sure to bolster the girl power mentality of any wearer come spring.
POP CULTURE-NOD: Think Anna Kendrick at the world premiere of her latest musical indie flick at the Tribeca Film Festival during an unusually early spring.
WEAR IT TO: A day at Randwick Races – in the members’ section, of course – followed by the chance to drink away your winnings overlooking the harbor at the Glenmore Hotel (just lose the wrist band).
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “Which one’s the Channel 7 weather reporter?” – in response to the flurry of presenters filming quick bits before the show, who all appeared to be wearing derivatives of the same style By Johnny dress. Also doing the rounds were whispers that the designer’s latest collection has officially earned him the moniker, “the next Toni Maticevski’.
SPOTTED: Bridget Malcolm, Rachael Finch, Bambi Northwood-Blyth, Terry Bivianio, Kyly Clarke, Danielle Cormack, Ksenija Lukich, Carissa Walford, Elyse Knowles, Sarah Ellen, Anna Heinrich, Nikki Phillips, Melina Vidler, Jules Sebastian.
COLOR WHEEL: Olive, whites and blacks, peppered with reflective metallics, including mixed metal pleating in gunmetal and gold and silver and rose gold. Featured throughout were floral motifs that paid homage to local interior designer Dina Broadhurst.
BEATS: A feminine mash-up of Placebo’s Running Up The Hill closed the flirty show with a bang.
THE DOCKET: Flirty dresses with fluid hems in flattering A-line silhouettes were delivered up in spades as part of the designer’s signature forte, while eye-catching tie backs and shoulders were featured on easy-to-wear summer separates. The designer took a departure from the labels focus on color blocks and cut-outs via a more fluid collection that toyed with proportion that appealed to the girly girl in show attendees.
