SHOW: Jennifer Kate – Resort 2017
LOCATION: Byron Kennedy Hall, Fox Studios, Moore Park
DATE: May. 17
START TIME: 8PM
OFF PROBATION: A stylish red blazer with white floral embroidery worn over a V-neck crop top and paired with a layered mini and stacked silver brogues.
GOOD BEHAVIOUR BOND: A fresh twist on the leather jacket stable – an aqua number with floral detailing on the sleeves, worn with a V-neck white crop top and forest green drawstring shorts, styled with silver chunky flats. If a tree falls in the forest you’re in you can be sure everyone’s eyes will remain on you in a plunging dark green jumpsuit mini with white floral embroidery tapering out from the center like moss.
INSPIRED BY: The seedy underbelly of Bangkok’s red light district – Bangla Road in Phuket – and a different kind of secret garden. Think the sort of enchanted forest that might be conjured up by the Cheshire Cat if assigned pimp of the fashion world in Tugley Wood.
POP CULTURE-NOD: Imagine the sort of look Anastasia Steele might don en route to rooftop drinks to interview Thailand’s equivalent of Christian Grey, on assignment from her paper’s New York office thanks to being allowed to accept a promotional junket travel feature sponsored by Singapore Airlines and the Mandarin Oriental.
WEAR IT TO: The upcoming The Temper Trap rock concert at Webster Hall, just days after an impromptu tweet from Kanye announcing a 2AM pop-up concert had the entire neighborhood shutdown, inciting riots from fans as crazy as Yeezy. Black lips optional. Think an active first date with a former college quarterback, where the ideal outfit is one which prevents you from suffering a Marilyn Monroe moment on a gusty subway grate in a flirty silk number.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “How awkward is the bus ride – I feel like we’re on school camp.” – In reference to the communal bus ride from Carriageworks to offsite locations.
COLOR WHEEL: Sunburnt orange, red, forest green, black, aqua, blush and taupe.
BEATS: Baauer’s “Temple”, which debuted at Alexander Wang’s F/W 2016 show in New York, spliced with bird chirps and nature sounds.
THE DOCKET: The only thing missing was a pair of handcuffs and a whip to complete the S&M vibe of Kate’s latest collection, which featured more leather, embroidery and cutouts than the upcoming installment of 50 Shades of Grey. Sporty chic meets rock chic glam was the playbook for the designer’s latest offering, which resembled the fashion interpretation of the latest Alice in Wonderland installment. Through the Looking Glass into Jennifer Kate’s resort 2017 was a grittily sordid but sinfully delicious affair.
