SHOW: Jason Wu – S/S 2017
LOCATION: The Gallery at Skylight Clarkson Square
DATE: Sept. 9
START TIME: 1PM + 23mins
TOP INSTA LOOK: A sheer nude jacket with a metallic midriff and neon yellow piping trim, worn over a matching slip and styled with a yellow python print bag.
BEHIND THE SCENES: Changing gears for S/S17, Wu clipped his invite list to 250 people and changed up his show format to a salon-style presentation in Spring Studio’s private club, Spring Place, which the designer had laced with antique dark wood furniture and floral arrangements by Putnam & Putnam.
OFF PROBATION: A strapless floor-length tulle dress with three-dimensional embroideries of fluorescent flowers in a mash-up of bright yellow, pink and blue, perfect for the 2017 Museum of Modern Art Garden Party when pair with a pair of sky-high neon Louboutins.
GOOD BEHAVIOUR BOND: A slinky, off-the-shoulder cut-away midi dress in patterned black lace with ruffle details, teamed with a pair of neon strappy heels.
INSPIRED BY: Swiss-born, New York-based artist Ugo Rondinone’s fluorescent acid trip of an art installation Seven Magic Mountains, which consists of seven technicolor limestone totem poles stacked 30- to 35-feet-tall in the desert landscape about 10 miles south of Las Vegas, near Jean Dry Lake and Interstate 15. The artist is also responsible for the “Hell, Yes!” iconic work presented on the New Museum’s façade from Dec.2007 to Nov.2010, representative of the openness, fearlessness and optimism surrounding the museum’s opening on the Bowery, akin to Wu’s sense of graduating to the next level along with his clients.
POP CULTURE-NOD: Wu’s close friend Diane Kruger promoting her latest indie flick on the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival, minus man-candy in the form of ex beau Joshua Jackson.
WEAR IT TO: Anna Wintour and Chelsea Clinton’s fashion fundraiser in support of the Hillary Clinton campaign ahead of New York Fashion Week to check out the collection of fundraising T-shirts designed by top New York fashion stalwarts, only to spot event co-host and Vice Chair of the campaign, Huma Abedin, emerge from backstage in a bright red skirt and Wu T-shirt.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “Do you think there will be a nod to Hillary hidden somewhere in the collection?”
SPOTTED: Sophia Sanchez de Betak, Leandra Medine, Caroline Issa, Princess Deena Aljuhani Abdulaziz, Inez van Lamsweerde, Vinoodh Matadin, Miroslava Duma
COLOR WHEEL: Metallic blue, neon yellow, tan, black and nude lace and an evening-friendly palette of navy and maroon.
THE DOCKET: Like Rondinone’s art installation, which appears spontaneous but in fact took five years to complete, Wu’s seasonal shift in show format mirrored a carefully-assembled sense of ease. Complete with floral prints to boot, neon accents, cheeky lace numbers and metallic fabrics, the designer’s latest collection reflected the wardrobe of a former club kid that’s since graduated to a full-time high-powered job in the fashion industry.
