The High Line – The Lowdown
Twenty years’ ago, imagining an above-ground world existing in downtown Manhattan would have seemed like an unimaginable proposition. Now, the realization of that very fantasy is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. Opened in 2009, the High Line functions as a public park and art walk, created on a historic freight railway elevated above the streets of Chelsea. Spanning from the Whitney Museum at the corner of Gansevoort Street and Washington, through the gallery district, the structure finishes up at the intersection of 34th Street and 12th Avenue. While the park pervades the entire Hudson Yards neighborhood, a main entrance located on 30th Street by 10 Hudson Yards marks the key access point for people visiting the shops, restaurants, The Shed cultural space and offices at Hudson Yards, which debuted in March. The best part about the mix of horticulture and design is that it changes with the seasons. Visit in summer to experience the water features and lush, green foliage: there’s fifteen distinct planning zones and more than 110,000 plants. Meanwhile, a walk after a dusting of snow in December plays out like you’re exploring a winter wonderland. Pause at the 10th Ave. square and overlook, which sports a large window with a vista downtown, with public performances taking place in the public amphitheater during the warmer months. Also key is a range of commissioned art projects that take place on and around the High Line, peppered throughout the plant-lined elevated parkway.
