Anna Sui NYFW F/W19 – Review
INSPIRED BY: Titled, “Poptimism,” designer Anna Sui’s latest collection paid homage to the swinging ‘60s and the punk rock lifestyle, using a color palette inspired by the vibrant and exotic works of Denmakr’s Verner Panton, American artist Mary Blair, and animator David Weidman.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Betsy Johnson’s niece hosting a Mat Hatter-themed rave after the Glitter Unicorn Sparkle Spectacular at the House of Yes in Brooklyn. The The Wizard of Oz’s Emerald City meets the set of Broadway’s Wicked.
WEAR IT TO: Your first day of beauty school at the Tigi Academy in Soho, followed by cocktails in Meatpacking at The Woodstock’s while soaking up its ‘60s living room vibes.
FIRST READ: Bright purple tights, paisley coats and mod-inspired mini dresses and skirts played to the show’s hippy, festival aesthetic, while cozy zebra-print coats, tweed suiting and frilly shirting added a clash of polished ladylike edge to the mix.
BEST LOOK: An electric purple silk blouse with ruffle detail, worn under an acid-green brocade tweed coat and styled with a black and teal mini skirt with slouchy pockets and velour emerald flats.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Spunky wigs in an array of psychedelic hues, statement tights paired with clashing prints, and cocktail frocks with beading embellishments and styled with Lurex stockings.
SPOTTED IN THE FROW: Sophia Coppola, Grace VanderWaal, Cara Santana, Carlotta Kohl, Coca Rocha, Karen Elson, Michele Hicks, Humberto Leon, Carol Lim, Pat Cleaveland.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “With the Motown soundtrack and psychedelic music posters I really feel like I’m watching the VIP section at Woodstock.”
COLOR WHEEL: Purple, hot pink, camel, emerald, green, black, red, yellow, blue, mustard, aqua, red, magenta, lavender, rust.
