Mr. C Seaport – The Lowdown

It’s been a long-time coming, but South Street Seaport has finally made headway with its reinvention progress after being hit by Hurricane Sandy. While the rooftop summer concert series atop Pier 17 fizzled out without fanfare, the latest addition to the East River’s historic entertainment district should be more successful at drawing the style crowd back to the area. Redeveloped by uncle-nephew team, Bob and Alex Ghassemieh, who built the Mr. C Hotel in L.A., the property offers panoramic views of the nearby East River, Brooklyn Bridge, and New York skyline.

Managed by the fourth generation Cipriani family – of the infamous restaurants by the same name – Mr C. provides 66 guest rooms and suites designed by Danish architect Thomas Juul-Hansen, who sought to inject a dose of mid-century downtown L.A. aesthetic into the former Best Western Seaport Inn Hotel, intended to mimic the spunk of Mr. C’s sister hotel in Beverly Hills.

The finishings are sleek and polished with a nautical slant: think teak veneer, oversized rain showers, 50-inch interaction 4K televisions, and luxe Casa Rovea Italian linens. Premier suites contain private furnished terraces overlooking Front Street or Peck Slip.

Dining options include rustic Italian fare at Bellini, with snacks and craft cocktails alos available at the adjacent bar. Be sure to grab a Bellini in the Lobby Bar – a concoction created by Cipriani brothers Maggio and Ignazio’s great-great-grandfather, Giuseppe, at Harry’s Bar in Venice, Italy.

Stay before the cold weather kicks in and watch the sun set behind the Statue of Liberty over a glass of champagne aboard a Clipper City yacht, a two-hour cruise run by Manhattan by Sail daily through October.
