Bibhu Mohapatra NYFW S/S20 – Review
INSPIRED BY: Richard Avedon and James Baldwin’s joint examination of American identity in their 1964 book, Nothing Personal. After celebrating his 10th anniversary of the brand last season, designer Bibhu Mohapatra delivered a more relaxed lineup that catered to fans looking to take looks from the boardroom to cocktail hour.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Amal Clooney celebrating her wedding anniversary on the Upper West Side following an afternoon of panel discussions at the United Nations.
WEAR IT TO: Toast the launch of your high-end jewelry collection over late-night drinks at Pastis in Meatpacking.
FIRST READ: Mohapatra’s latest collection featured plenty of his signature red-carpet looks, but he expanded on daywear options via a series of chic midi dresses, edgy leather bombers worn over playful jumpsuits, and feather jackets, which looked just as at home over a mini party frock as atop an evening gown with beaded embellishments. Think the sort of wardrobe a modern-day princess might lust after if she was forced to accept a nine-to-five gig on the side.
BEST LOOK: An apricot sleeveless trench coat covered in the phrase, “B the one,” worn over a black shift dress with crystal detail and styled with lace-up pumps.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Guipure lace dresses gave off a Picnic at Hanging Rock vibe, while pleated shirts with asymmetrical hemlines and strapless ball gowns with layered tulle skirts and silk trains played to the designer’s knack for plays on proportion.
