SHOW: Bondi Bather – Resort 2017
LOCATION: The Box, Carriageworks
DATE: May. 19
START TIME: 2PM
TOP INSTA LOOK: Channeling sleepwear Peter Alexander’s playful, tongue-in-cheek aesthetic, the label sent models down the runway carrying an adorable brown sausage dog, arguably a more desirable accessory on the sands of Bondi than an actual dapper gent (because let’s face it, you’re only there for the lifeguards). Stealing the show was the models’ staged pregnant paused mid-show in order to treat guests to their interpretation of the running man. Because in the absence of water swimming is pretty difficult…
BEHIND THE SCENES: The Redken style team creating a series of inverted fish braids on the beach-ready model babes, who were said to be squabbling over who would get to chaperone the pup down the runway.
OFF PROBATION: A beach-inspired patterned low-backed one-piece swimsuit, styled with Velcro stacked Reef-style beach flats and given a volleyball-ready edge via a pair of inverted fish braids.
GOOD BEHAVIOUR BOND: A Cynthia Rowley-style full-length sleeve high-neck one piece in electric blue with black piping, worn with a light blue bucket visor and black slides. Keeping the collection fresh and playful were chic caps and hats, in addition to sporty clutches, old school Velcro toss and catch ball set games and iPhone cases, such as a pink ice-cream sundae to match a blue and white pattern two-piece swimsuit and its platinum blonde wearer.
INSPIRED BY: The foreign fashion week notion of healthy girls with a healthy attitude, the definition of the ultimate North Bondi babe.
POP CULTURE-NOD: Kate Bosworth in Blue Crush up at dawn every morning conquering the waves while counting down the days to the Rip Masters Surf Competition, followed by the month-long celebration afterwards enjoying the lazy days of summer and all-day happy hour on the sand with her new NFL quarterback beau Matt. The model turned ‘Postcards’ travel reporter that only gets assigned tropical locations where she’ll be showing 75 percent skin.
WEAR IT TO: Your next trip to Hawaii – the one where you’re determined to channel your inner surfer girl and avoid a repeat of your last visit, the one marred by sunburn, jellyfish stings and a belly full of salt water. “Life’s Swell,” is your predetermined hashtag for the next 11.5 days.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “This is the first collection I’d concede to the one-piece transition for.” – overheard courtside in reference to the label’s suite of more demure coveralls.
COLOR WHEEL: Titled, “High Tide”, the collection played out in a series of muted shades of blue with beach patterns featured throughout.
THE DOCKET: Forming part of the hotly anticipated ‘Swim Day’ at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia, Bondi Bather left the tanning oil at home in delivering a series of looks as fresh and youthful as they were edgy and downtown cool. Think Cameron Diaz grabbing a bite to eat with former lovebird Kelly Slater at The Crab Shack after an afternoon of surfing the legendary Banzai Pipeline off Ehukai Beach Park. From high-cut one and two-piece swimsuits to athletic-inspired separates in luxe patterns such as ‘Powder Diamonds’, “Pearler” and “24 Carot”, Bondi Bather allows you to channel the stormy skies and shimmering waters of every Brit backpackers dream gap year hookup without the need to swap the dog leash for your board one.
