Brooklyn Bridge – The Lowdown
The unofficial connection between Manhattanites and the top knot-sporting hipsters of Dumbo, the Brooklyn Bridge spans nearly 6,000 feet and provides one of the most iconic vistas of downtown NYC. Make like a local and avoid the cyclists as you trek across the elevated wooden walkway, complete with its harp-like cables which loom over the East River and provide the perfect backdrop for an enviable Instagram update. Opened in 1883, around 125,000 motor vehicles, 4,000 pedestrians and 2,600 bike riders make pilgrimage across the landmark each day, while almost as many tourists risk a $100 fine by attaching padlocks, or “love locks” to the bridge’s pedestrian promenade to echo the romantic gesture made popular by folks at Paris’s Pont des Arts. Embark via the Manhattan-side entrance at Park Row and Centre Street, across from City Hall Park, east of City Hall; and over on the Brooklyn side, enter at Cadman Plaza East or where Boerum Place meets Tillary Street.
