Calvin Klein S/S 2018 – Review

INSPIRED BY: Iconic Americans – think Andy Warhol prints of Dennis Hopper in the counterculture biker flick Easy Rider, art collector Sandra Brant and imagery from his Death & Disaster series. Designer Raf Simmons paid homage to a mashup of Western, 70’s, playful pop-art and collage culture over the course of the show.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Woody from Toy Story on a date with the in-demand Catwoman at Coyote Ugly in the East Village.
WEAR IT TO: Your cheerleading tryouts for the Washington State University Cougars, before making a quick change and heading to the track to check on your bets ahead of the Budweiser Stakes at the Emerald Downs Racetrack and Casino.
FIRST READ: Color-blocked silk Western pocket shirts, plaid suiting and shift dresses with pop art-inspired prints gave way to painted jeans and denim jackets and PVC looks via raincoats, one-shouldered dresses and A-line skirts – perfect pieces to don while washing down the crime scene on the set of your upcoming horror flick.
BEST LOOK: A patriotic flapper-inspired dress with fringe detail in red, white, black and blue, feature a webbed neckline and was teamed with ankle lace-up stacked booties. An honorable mention goes to a cream off-the-shoulder knee-length dress with a red paintbrush-stroke pattern, paired with sky-blue heels.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Red-and-yellow oversized pompoms, banners and streamers attached to the rafters as part of the designer’s collaboration with Sterling Ruby. Titled, “Sophomore”, in reference to high-school festivities, the installation was given a macabre edge via patchwork flags and hanging axes. Branded towels, bags with fringing and totes with graphic prints added to the show’s punk-rock feel.
