Calvin Luo NYFW F/W19 – Review
INSPIRED BY: The power-broker suiting of the ‘80s and the grungy aesthetic of the ‘90s. Designer Calvin Luo cited the evolving music scene as key behind his latest collection, which featured men’s and women’s and an array of unisex looks.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Sarah Michelle Gellar locked in a diabolical wager as the sinister Kathryn in Cruel Intentions meets the sartorial savviness of Cher in Clueless.
WEAR IT TO: The opening of a Wall Street-themed indie music bar in Williamsburg.
FIRST READ: Boxy oversized checked blazers with exaggerated shoulders and ruffle detail played to the show’s ‘80’s vibe, while sequined apron dresses, striped one-shoulder frocks and oversized plaid coats added a dose of ladylike elegance to the lineup.
BEST LOOK: A white and grey athletic-style jacket, styled with a sequin skirt and zebra-print mules.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Knee-high sheer tights provided a sense of ‘90s schoolgirl nostalgia, while frocks emblazoned in the designer’s name reminded attendees of his penchant for pushing the boundaries each season.
SPOTTED IN THE FROW: Billie Blunt, Michelle Song, Tenille Arts, Jordan Roth, Angela Sarafyan, Eric Rutherford, Margaret Zhang, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Dan Amboyer, Taylen Biggs.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “I’m so hungover – please don’t drag me to another after-party tonight, my body can’t handle it.”
COLOR WHEEL: Red, black, white, cobalt, navy, blue, gray, orange, rust, slate, maroon.
