Calvin Luo F/W 2018 – Review

INSPIRED BY: The minimalist art of Brice Marden and the bombshell women of the 1950’s Elvis era. Think a modern update on the three showbiz girls clawing their way to the top in the Big Apple in Jacqueline Susann’s classic, Valley of the Dolls.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Beyonce behind the wheel recording Bonnie & Clyde with then-boyfriend Jay Z.
WEAR IT TO: Your job interview at celebrity haunt Marie Robinson Salon, before heading downtown to catch a live indie band with the cool kids at Pianos on Ludlow.
FIRST READ: Deconstructed shirts, ruched velvet dresses, and color-blocked knits played to the show’s feminine, vintage vibe. Luo also offered up a series of looks catering to the West Village socialite via a series of satin trousers, strappy gingham dresses, and fitted double-breasted blazers.
BEST LOOK: A blue body-con dress, worn with a grey and indigo coat, matching headscarf and pointed heels.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Driving Miss Daisy-inspired gloves, paisley head scarfs and crushed velvet separates gave the collection a gangster feel, while plaid and gingham played to the 50’s housewife edge.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “I can’t decide if this collection is more Jaden Smith at the club or Rihanna on a press junket.”
COLOR WHEEL: Taupe, tomato, black, blue, white, black, yellow, denim, brown, red.
