Cong Tri NYFW S/S20 – Review
INSPIRED BY: Designer Cong Tri’s desire to inject a dose of fun back into red-carpet dressing. Shrinking violets beware.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Zendaya at the 2020 Vanity Fair Oscar Party in L.A.
WEAR IT TO: The Pantone-sponsored Young Members Party at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
FIRST READ: The show opened with a series of monochromatic looks in black and white: think sheer strapless trapeze gowns, one-shouldered A-line frocks and midi dresses with plunging necklines. The lineup ventured into vampy vixen territory via a number of cocktail minis with ruffled arm detail, while slinky red-carpet-ready gowns with statement trains in jewel hues seemed fit for next awards season.
BEST LOOK: A strapless mini dress with feather detail in rainbow shades with a chiffon train, styled with lime heels and slicked-back hair. Also key was a bridal white gown featuring floaty front detail and balloon sleeves and beaded embroidery.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: ‘80’s-style party dressing given a modern update through Tri’s clever use of proportion and plays on silhouettes. Fans of his Hollywood-friendly gowns were sure to be pleased with the range of his offering for spring – its color palette included.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “I usually stick to a little black dress for events but I’m now convinced I could do color, even yellow.”
COLOR WHEEL: White, black, blush, teal, turquoise, fuchsia, yellow, lime, purple, red, blue, magenta, gold, taupe, ivory.
