SHOW: Daniel Avakian – Resort 2017
LOCATION: The Theatre, Carriageworks
DATE: May. 18
START TIME: 12PM
TOP INSTA LOOK: Enhancing the disco tech vibe were Bang and Olufsen’s B&O Play portable speakers and state of the art headphones, hung around models’ necks like a hipster DJ boarding a 14-hour flight from L.A. to Australia, first class, of course. Jeweler Natalia Marie’s capsule collection of hair pins, cuffs and hoops looped on neck scarves up the edgy vibe of the offering.
BEHIND THE SCENES: Hair was knotted and locked in place with an oversized pin, keeping in check with the futuristic vibe.
OFF PROBATION: A geometric print black and white layered slip dress with a sheer panel from the thigh down, styled with a matching scarf and headphones, paired with white flats.
GOOD BEHAVIOUR BOND: A strapless loose-fitting top with sheer black and white paneling at the bottom, worn with white-after-Labor-Day trousers and teamed with a boxer robe in dusty pink.
INSPIRED BY: The intersection of technology and fashion, casting a throwback to Avakian’s younger days, presumably DJ and rave culture peppered with pretty models and partygoers in a place where the sun never rises.
POP CULTURE-NOD: Ruby Rose hosting an impromptu DJ set at Pacha in New York while on hiatus from filming Orange is the New Black, where, yet again, she has to dodge people tossing panties at her from the crowd. Think the sort of garb you graduate to when the need for a real, full-time job forces you to hang up your furry candy-color rave gear.
WEAR IT TO: The DJ Shadow concert for your maiden visit to the Music Hall of Williamsburg, where you hope to both stand out and blend in while you wait over an hour with the hipsters on N 6th to gain access to $5 drinks and a sensory overload in which everyone vows ‘learning to mix’ will be the song of the summer.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “OK, maybe I don’t need them then…” – one attendee’s reaction to finding out Bang and Olufsen’s portable speakers cost US$399.
BEATS: Closing track – Soul II Soul’s “Back to Life”.
SPOTTED: Nikki Phillips, Anna Heinrich, Edwina McCann, Christine Centenera, Carmen Hamilton, Alison Veness-McGourty, Sara Donaldson, Kaitlyn Ham, Lee Oliveira.
COLOR WHEEL: Ballet pink, white, black and saffron yellow.
THE DOCKET: Slinky gowns, elegant slips, smoking blazers and floor-length robes were evocative of the sort of wardrobe packed in the suitcase of a globetrotting in-demand DJ, one that has just landed at The Standard Hotel Meatpacking ahead of a late-night session at Up & Down. Simplicity was key in the designer’s ode to form and functionality, with many looks taking on an almost androgynous or masculine edge. Avakian delivered a sleek and polished collection that will have you channeling your faux DJ name on the technoscape stage.
