Delpozo F/W 2015 – Review
As parents everywhere lamented the announcement about Disney’s plans to expand on its much-loved – and equal parts irritating – Frozen franchise, Spanish fashion house Delpozo delivered up a flurry of fantastical looks, perfect for the grown-up Princess Elsa that refuses to ‘Let it Go’.
Set among a futuristic winter wonderland, designer Josep Font – tapped to revive the brand in 2012 – did little to distract show attendee’s about the ongoing arctic freeze outside. But his range of bright coats and eccentric ensembles in a spring-inspired color palette had the fash pack signing up to exchange their current season sleeping bag uniforms for a slice of the label’s latest offering for fall.
Inspired by the contrasting styles of Australian artist Rhys Lee’s vivacious and sinister paintings and the contemporary, romantic works of Russia’s Andrey Remnev, the show played out like a fairytale narrative of color-blocking magic, equally fit for the braid-sporting snow queen on a Vermont vacation and her aging arch nemesis lurking in the shadows.
The diverse range of prêt-à-couture creations included a string of structured outwear featuring balloon sleeves – a standout was a cornflower blue calf-grazing coat featuring abstract leather birds and leaves appliques.
Font flexed his talent for perfecting the play on proportions through a pinafore-style dress with canary yellow long sleeves, while he hit the right note again with a Kelly green knee-length dress sporting bubble sleeves with matching neck and wrist aqua accents.
Continuing the seamless merging of softness and sculpture were a series of arresting shifts with oversized colored beading, while Font upped the glam factor by showing similar dresses in sumptuous velvet, which also graced a sexy floor-length strappy Grecian gown in dark green and merlot.
Chunky knits with crocheted accents facilitated the collection’s segue from day to night, with red-carpet ready looks such as a floaty gown in icy blue with sheer panels – all a reflection of Font’s dazzling penchant for churning out dreamlike couture creations.
For the Little Red Riding Hood hipster keen for a night on the town sans her Big Bad Wolf-protective cape was a voluminous, structured red coat with matching ankle-strap heels, while catering to those looking for a more sinister edge were a series of dresses and outwear featuring crimson floral prints on a black backdrop with demure sheer cutouts.
Models walked the runway sporting sleek ponies and oversized flower petal hair pieces, reflecting the juxtaposition between the harsh silhouettes and dreamy romanticism vibe that played out through the show. Makeup was kept innocently bare, playing up to the eyes with pretty apricot liner.
While the dictionary defines a ‘font’ as a set of printed letters, numbers and other symbols of the same style, Delpozo’s feted designer shows no sign of staying within a defined set of lines anytime soon.
And as parents hit ‘replay’ on Frozen for the umpteenth time this winter, there are sure to be no qualms on rebooting Delpozo’s latest eccentric, mood-boosting runway offering as the city (yet again) prepares to re-enter the land of wintery mix come fall.
