Desigual S/S 2018 – Review

INSPIRED BY: The desire to shun the traditional runway-show format this season in preference of an immersive performance as part of a celebration of multiculturalism, which played out like a hybrid circus-dance in collaboration with composer Sam Spiegel and choreographer Ryan Heffington. Desigual’s new creative director Jean- Paul Goude stamped his design chops on the brand via a series of exotic and eclectic nods across all cultures while keeping in sync with the label’s all-inclusive ethos.
POP-CULTURE NOD: The opening to So You Think You Can Dance’s “It’s a Small World” episode, featuring a cameo pop number by Nicki Minaj.
WEAR IT TO: Lounging poolside over handcrafted cocktails at Seminyak hipster hot spot Potato Head Beach Club, before hitting the refresh button and grabbing a spot on the 500-square meter emerald lawn to dance the night away as the DJ heads behind the decks.
FIRST READ: Zebra-print cropped hoodies and matching flared skirts, color-blocked knitwear, geometric and ethnic-inspired prints rounded out the diverse collection, while jackets with graffiti prints and a range of denim looks reflected a more streetwear vibe. 
BEST LOOK: A pair of matching Chinese-influenced looks – a  white cropped bomber with red-and-yellow perforated sleeves and a varsity-style ‘D’ logo, paired with black-and-white polka-dot bloomers, lace-up runners and a fresh take on the conical hat (A bobbing red pompom and a sun-safe mesh back-flap). 
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Raffia leg accents, gold face paint, oriental prints and oversized ponchos featuring playful prints drew influence from a myriad of cultures, while the theatrical element played up the brand’s youthful appeal.
