While the highlight for many a gentleman in the crowd at Desigual’s spring 2015 show was no doubt seeing Victoria’s Secret model Adriana Lima open and close the runway shindig, for the rest of the attendees, the floral, Hawaiian-inspired offering played out like a giant party that went off with a bang.
Catchy pop music matched the string of floral prints, preppy skirt dresses and flowery head wear, while Hibiscus, daisy, dahlia and rose prints featured throughout.
Christian Lacroix cited a mix of South American culture and Mediterranean motifs as his key inspiration points for the offering, which had attendees lusting for the Barcelona sun through the show’s warm tropical colors and upbeat vibe.
The color palette screamed ‘street party at Carnival’, featuring loud bright colors in hues of lemon, fire red and electric blues.
Fresh, fun and happy was the sentiment of the collection, which played out like a psychedelic journey through a kaleidoscope of geometric patterns, desert roses and tropical prints.
Cut-off shorts with floral applique were just as at home in this 57-look collection as elegant, floaty silk jumpsuits covered in a frenzied mix of geometric and floral prints.
A standout look was a lemon sorbet colored shift dress with long sleeves featuring stripes in a rainbow of primary colors, while a blue and white floral patterned resort-style mini dress ensured that the collection remained ladylike appropriate for hotel happy hour at the Copacabana Palace.
Appropriately named ‘Say Something Nice’, the Spanish brand’s collection was showcased by cheeky smiling models – some of whom carried Instagram-friendly quote cards – and all played up for the cameras with a string of cheeky winks, twists and turns at the end of the runway, playing up to the adage ‘If you’ve got it, flaunt it’.
Adding to the celebratory vibe – which at times felt like viewing a preview of the best-looking set of Brazilian bridesmaids a budding bride could hope for – were the baskets of rose petals thrown by the models on the final walk at the frow, which included Olivia Palermo, Poppy Delavinge and Rosario Dawson.
Given the often sterile nature of most shows at the Lincoln Center, Desigual is to be applauded for giving the crowd – and the models – something to smile about.
