SHOW: Di$count Universe – Resort 2017
LOCATION: The Theatre, Carriageworks
DATE: May. 18
START TIME: 6PM + 40 mins
TOP INSTA LOOK: A showstopper text-covered bright blue duster jacket emblazoned with phrases such as “Look left, you failed”, “I have a dick”, “Eat the Rich”, styled with a studded bandeau top and matching cobalt pants, teamed with a silver chain choker layered necklace and padlock. Think Miley on a downward spiral post-breakup with Chris Hemsworth twerking at the VMAs.
BEHIND THE SCENES: Models nervously estimating the time between the Di$count Universe runway and their next show as makeup artists painted brightly colored tears down their faces.
OFF PROBATION: An electric blue smoking jacket covered in bright sequin flowers – no doubt handcrafted in Melbourne native designers Nadia Napreychikov and Cami James adopted hometown of Bali – worn over a cheeky gold sequin bikini and paired with thigh-high multicolor embellished boots peppered with floral patterns, an outfit sure to be in favor with Lady Gaga on her next racy Christmas duet with Tony Bennett.
GOOD BEHAVIOUR BOND: A white hoody covered with psychedelic sequin roses, teamed with matching pants with a front slit, paired with boots of the same pattern in a look that somehow managed to avoid looking OTT and sure to be on the shopping list of Katy Perry for her warm-up gear (and accompanying Instagram shot) ahead of her next Super Bowl contract, complete with a pair of dancing sharks.
INSPIRED BY: New York-based Jeremy Scott and the seedy late-night bars of the Lower East Side, crossed with the best parts of the 80’s and early 90’s Trainspotting rave culture. Glitzy graffiti meets punk rocker, laced with a girly, sassy twist.
POP CULTURE-NOD: If Kylie Jenner accepted her momager’s directive to stage a publicity-driven full-blown, Britney-style public breakdown, she need look no further than a sheer nude graphic catsuit, covered with barbed wire imagery and sequined embroidery of two couples hot and heavily making out, teamed with nude leggings covered with cobalt flowers and pink pattered boots. Whip not included.
WEAR IT TO: Jeremy Scott’s September New York Fashion Week show, followed by a quick outfit change ahead of the A-list after party, following which you’re sure to get nabbed for a role on the designer’s press team for the amount of social media traction you’re likely to garner amid mistaken guesses you’re in fact dressed head to toe in Scott’s latest designs.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “I’d love to wear that to my brother’s engagement party as a f$ck you to his horrible finance.” – overheard from one guest lusting over the shock and awe factor of the sheer unitards.
BEATS: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ “Do You Love Me?”.
SPOTTED: Imojen Anthony, Christine Centenera, Edwina McCann, Louise Van Der Vorst, Pip Edwards.
COLOR WHEEL: Vibrant hues and shimmery sequins that matched bold banging makeup. Cobalt blue, pastel pink, gold, silver, red, black – all colors of your illicit drug-fueled psychedelic rainbow. Imagine if Rainbow Brite accepted a magic mushroom-laced cupcake from Strawberry Shortcake.
THE DOCKET: Electric blue plaits and severe top knots were the addictive and sugary icing on the cake of a collection that resembled an acid trip through the early 90’s rave culture in downtown New York. Sequins on sequins on sequins combined to deliver a range of looks that spanned sexy unitards, statement blazers and jawdropping legs-for-days boots that will have you looking like the next emerging rocker nominee at the Grammy’s. No staged press-driven meltdown required.
