INSPIRED BY: The gritty, grungy aesthetic of the East Village club kid in the 90’s, reimagined as the Bondi beach bum of today. Committed to delivering an antidote to traditional resort brands, designers Toby Jones and Mikey Nolen – former art and creative director of cult denim label Ksubi – served up a kaleidoscope of athletic-themed looks suited to the track, pool, urban jungle, or chasing lasers at a warehouse in Brooklyn.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Miami Vice-meets-Dazed and Confused. Think the sort of getup the incoming freshman class might don to avoid an unfortunate hazing from a sadistic senior, ala Ben Affleck in the 1993 cult classic.
WEAR IT TO: Belt out a karaoke rendition of Nirvana’s Teen Spirit at Arelene’s Grocery’s open-mic night, before heading to the Sixty LES for an after-hours pool party.
FIRST READ: Bold beachwear with a school-throwback twist via knee-high socks and sun-smart hats and caps. From sweaters and track pants in racing-inspired checks, to high-waisted shorts and cropped shirts in ice-cream prints, the label stayed true to its signature aesthetic of delivering looks as suited to the skatepark as the sands of Malibu.
BEST LOOK: A one-piece swimsuit in blue, red and yellow checks, teamed with matching sweatpants and two buoys in a fisherman-net bag.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Printed track-and-field-style sweats, featuring phrases such as “Pool Side Wifi” and “Double Rainbouu Leisure Industry”, chunky sneakers as part of the label’s collaboration with Globe, belts fashioned from tackle rope, and fishing paraphernalia reinvented as beach-ready bags.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “Does coming to this fashion show qualify as attending a live gig here? Does it make me a groupie?”
