McNally Jackson – The Lowdown
Aspiring novelists in search of a date that doesn’t use Tinder should look no further than McNally Jackson, the revered independent bookshop opened by former editor Sarah McNally in Nolita in 2004. Located on Prince Street, the store hosts an array of cultural events and book signings, and features a boggling array of literature, non-fiction, and international magazines. McNally devotees flock to the store for its diverse and well-stocked inventory, knowledgeable staff, thoughtful recommendations, and abundance of notebooks and other writing tools. Unlike other big-box bookstores, patrons are encouraged to browse the isles, then open a laptop and tap out their next bestseller over a coffee and pastry. McNally opened a second branch in Williamsburg last January in the Lewis Steel building, spanning nearly 4,000 square feet and housing roughly 35,000 titles. The brand debuted a small space in the revamped LaGuardia Airport, and there are plans to launch a store in Downtown Brooklyn this fall. Also in the works is a two-story shop at South Street Seaport, which will occupy several buildings across more than 7,000 square feet. Tip: Make sure to checkout the Nolita store’s “On Display” section, which spotlights an array of the staff’s top contemporary picks that you might not see on the shelves at Borders.
