SHOW: Emma Mulholland – Resort 2017
LOCATION: The Box, Carriageworks
DATE: May. 18
START TIME: 3PM + 18mins
TOP INSTA LOOK: A magical rainbow and unicorn sweatshirt complete with star-studded sleeves, paired with a pair of sequined blue smoking trousers – probably not conducive to sleeping soundly, but rather dreaming in technicolor. Pretty face art complimented the intergalactic theme, while multi-colored stars and space shapes peppered around the models’ eyes ignited memories of glow-in-the-dark space stickers from days gone by.
BEHIND THE SCENES: Models rehearsing their “E.T. PHONE HOME” moment while striking a pose in front of the pit.
OFF PROBATION: A primary-color hued rainbow sequined pinafore dress worn over a cap sleeve cherry bomb tee, perfect for meeting the extraterrestrial locals on mars.
GOOD BEHAVIOUR BOND: A shimmery blue spaghetti strap ankle-grazing slip, worn over a pink sequin crop top and teamed with bright metallic flats. The look was supersized via the powder blue tresses of the alien-moonlighting model who went incognito in the look thanks to a pair of oversized white shades.
INSPIRED BY: Space and the unknown millions of yet-to-be-discovered alternate forms of life within it. Mulholland’s latest collection paid homage to futuristic shapes and forms, with the designer amping up the kooky factor through retro prints and reflective mediums. Misfits in the form of aliens was the play of the day, set in the time warp of 60’s space age, where the popping artificially intelligent playground provided a temporary home for every outcast resort goer.
POP CULTURE-NOD: Threads designed to don the Beastie Boys’ now-tween offspring at their first Full Moon party (the one where they’re trying magic mushrooms for the first time).
WEAR IT TO: Japan Fall Fashion Week in September, because there was no reference to Hello Kitty here.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “Why do they always overstuff The Box like a size 8 trying to fit into a 4?” – in reference to the amount of standing guests jammed into the tight space hugging the assigned seating area.
COLOR WHEEL: Rainbow Brite pink and blue, outer space silver and gold, and enough retro patterns to have you remembering childhood aspirations of actually one day becoming an astronaut. Inspired by pop icons such as The B52’s Rock Lobster, David Bowie and Prince, the designer’s prints slapped a seal of approval on outcasts intent on following a path into uncharted territory.
BEATS: The Beastie Boys’ Intergalactic transported attendees to (almost) another dimension.
THE DOCKET: Cherry-pick your next planet on which to update your zip code to and take Mulholland’s complete resort 17 collection with you, no passport or space ship required.
