Fast Fashion – Opening Ceremony

When you’re waiting in line for a New York Fashion Week show and overhear a PR girl bark, “clear a front row for the Opening Ceremony team” minutes before the event is slated to begin, you know you’re dealing with a serious amount of street cred. Founded in 2002 by two buddies from the University of California, Berkley, Carol Lim and Humberto Lean have developed a cult following among fans obsessed with the label’s suite of iconic and emerging homegrown designers, while collaborations with brands such as Vans and Levi’s provide a more accessible price point for avid shoppers looking to buy into the commerce phenomenon. Keeping in check with the retailer’s focus on pageantry, each year the pair spotlights the merchandise and spirit of a visiting country by transforming each store into a marketplace for souvenirs and fresh international talent (market research, of course, requires the owners to travel to the designated location of choice to kick back and absorb the culture and vibe). Opening Ceremony operates two stores at the intersection of Soho and Chinatown on Howard Street, stocking designers such as Alexander Wang, Rodarte, Pamela Love and Proenza Schouler. Be sure to check out the infamous art installations and theatrical displays, which provide a feast for the eyes if your budget doesn’t lend itself to the price tags. At the aforementioned fashion show, the Opening Ceremony tribe were dressed collectively head-to-toe black – the ultimate style uniform. Aspiring future Vogue editors, take note.
