Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum – The Lowdown
The futuristic-looking Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum adds a modern element to the historic Upper East Side. Designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the space houses an international collection featuring modern and contemporary art from the 19th-century to the present. Unlike most museums, there’s no division by medium or era; the collection is integrated and added to by need or in response to emerging talent.
In line with Wright’s initial vision, visitors are encouraged to take an elevator to the top of the building and its domed skylight, then proceed downward on the spiral sloped ramp. Checkout the monthly “Art After Dark” series for an after-hours private viewing of the current exhibitions with a live DJ set, cocktails, and the chance to rub shoulders with the stylish art crowd.
