SHOW: Ginger & Smart – Resort 2017
LOCATION: The Runway, Carriageworks
DATE: May. 16
START TIME: 10PM
TOP INSTA LOOK: 3D-printed drop earrings hanging from models’ left ears – kicking off one of the season’s biggest trends.
BEHIND THE SCENES: Hungover show attendees regretting partying a little too hard on day one of MBFW after the Maticevski show.
OFF PROBATION: Oversized floppy sun hats by Jonathan Howard – big enough to disguise Lindsay Lohan following her biggest blow-out at the Chateau Marmont celebrating her faux engagement shindig. Asymmetrical layers and jacquard stripes proved capable of magnetically retaining your person in earth’s immediate orbit.
GOOD BEHAVIOUR BOND: A strapless ballet pink silk romper teamed with black raffia slides, just as suited to hiding Blake Lively’s growing baby bump as on her Gossip Girl character Selena van der Woodsen while sipping an Aperol Spritz poolside with her posse at Soho’s Jimmy at The James (the only thing missing is a pair of oversized dark Chanel shades). Long sheer blue cover ups and lace relaxed hooded jackets gave the collection a sporty vibe, while frills and asymmetrical cuts added volumes to the glam factor.
INSPIRED BY: Earth’s reflection from outer space (minus the intergalactic planetary print). Think ocean, mountain, desert and cloud, the endless boundaries of the great outdoors.
POP CULTURE-NOD: The return of fanny packs in chic black and white leather will ensure zero chance of tipsily forgetting your bag after a brunch of bottomless mimosas at Cipriani Downtown with your former sorority sisters from the O.C.
WEAR IT TO: Your next trip on the Hamptons Jitney to the hottest overblown wedding of the season at a winery in North Fork.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “I literally got dressed in the car – I woke my boyfriend up to make him drive me on the promise I’d repay him in beer.”
SPOTTED: Bambi Northwood-Blyth, Bridget Malcolm, Margaret Zhang, Justin O’Shea, Pip Edwards and Christine Centenera.
COLOR WHEEL: Stark white, ocean blue, dusty blush, beige and black, while space cowboy and galactic prints gave the collection the brand’s trademark flair.
BEATS: Tactile Music, Gary Sinclair’s ‘Nasa’, The Golden Record, Applescal, JG Wilkes, Biran Eno.
THE DOCKET: The visual definition of relaxed luxury, sisters Genevieve and Alexandra Smart delivered a suite of textural accents – from lace in topography patterns to natural woven raffia – giving the collection a futuristic edge through galaxy prints and semi-sheer tunics, cut-out pieces and swimwear.
Floaty silhouettes and oversized sleeves, asymmetric hems and off-the-shoulder cuts proved fit for the wardrobe of an former Bondi Beach babe vacationing in Seminyak, intent on a series of looks able to be taken from day to a sultry night over spiced mojitos at Ku De Ta.
