Katz’s Delicatessen – The Lowdown
Despite the ongoing gentrification of the Lower East Side, Katz’s Delicatessen remains a New York institution as a 24-hour no-frills diner serving mile-high sandwiches since 1888. Made famous by that scene in When Harry Met Sally, the Houston Street landmark is famous for its overstuff pastrami-on-rye subs and large half-sour pickles. Guests can actually lampoon the famous scene thanks to a sign directing people to the booth were Meg Ryan sat, just like Saturday Night Live’s cast reenacted on the debut of the show’s 41st season. Recognizable by the lit-up neon sign on the corner of Ludlow Street, the longtime rumor is that patrons face a $50 fine if they lose their ticket order, and the institution only accepts cash. Katz’s remains a favorite among celebrities and tourists alike, and has starred in the Frank Sinatra film Contract on Cherry Street, Johnny Depp’s Donnie Brasco, and features regularly on The Jim Gaffigan Show.
