Union Square Farmers Market – The Lowdown

After you’ve watched over-confident tourists challenge the professional chess players at two-by-two-foot fold-out tables on the southwest strip of Union Square Park, head north to the outdoor Greenmarket – a hipster haven featured in a flurry of iconic New York films. Started in 1976 by a handful of farmers, the daily bazaar features an array of seasonal bounty and up to 140 vendors in the peak of summer. From fresh fruit and veggies, to artisan breads, craft beer and cider, jams, pickles and maple syrup, the market attracts up to 60,000 market shoppers daily. Come spring, green thumbs delight in the array of cut flowers and plants, while you might discover an emerging local prodigy among the suite of custom art and fashion offerings peppered throughout. Check the weekly calendar for any cameos by some of the city’s top chefs.
