Gucci Cruise 2019 – Review
INSPIRED BY: Catholic influences, 19th-century Italy and the punk-rock era, Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele used the show’s location in the Roman necropolis, Alyscamps, to double down on the collection’s moody Gothic aesthetic – think 1987 psychological horror flick Flowers in the Attic.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Darren Criss as retro serial killer Andrew Cunanan in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. Officially, the show paid homage to Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont, with several separates featuring the L.A hotspot’s iconic logo.
WEAR IT TO: Your fashion friend’s summer spritzer at the Guggenheim, themed to match the Met Gala’s ode to “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” before heading downtown to dance with tears in your eyes to Finnish death rockers, Grave Pleasures, seven-inch apocalyptic record, Funeral Party.
FIRST READ: The broody collection walked the line between the desperate Upper West Side housewife acting out against her cheating Wall Street hedge fund husband and the sort of look a former Karl Lagerfeld intern might sport to a Parisian royal wedding. From Morticia Addams-inspired gowns to 70’s-style smoking robes and silk scarves, the lineup drew inspiration from a plethora of religious, sportif and vintage archives, all with dark undertones thrown in to spice things up.
BEST LOOK: A striped white shirt, worn under a Kelly green lurex bomber and matching track pants with athletic side piping, styled under a lavender and rose-gold silk trench, signature Gucci trainers and a canvas tote bag.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Black leather pants with text detailing, spiked clutches, Reef-style Velcro sandals, oversized floral broaches, mismatched sunglasses, cross pendant necklaces, magenta gloves, gold sparkly sequined skirts.
SPOTTED IN THE FROW: Christian Lacroix, Salma Hayek, A$AP Rocky, Saoirse Ronan, Andre Balazs.
