Gustav Von Aschenbach NYFWM S/S19 – Review
INSPIRED BY: Swiss midcentury graphic design and typography and the desire to reinterpret the work of stars of Switzerland’s Basel School of Design, Armin Hofmann and Emil Ruder.
POP-CULTURE NOD: The after-party following Gary Hustwit-directed documentary Helvetica in the Vinyl Room at Soho House in Meatpacking, watching Steve Aoki on the decks while knocking back Suntory Whiskey-laced Old Fashions.
WEAR IT TO: An international reporting assignment as part of your freelancing gig for GQ to uncover the ten hottest emerging contemporary Manga artists reshaping the eminent Japanese comic scene.
FIRST READ: Now in its third season, Robert Geller’s Gustav von Aschenbach line delivered a street culture-friendly collection with a focus on corduroy workwear jackets, twill coats, typography shirts and technical nylon shorts and pants, crafted from refined cottons, nylons and lightweight techy fabrics sourced from Japan.
BEST LOOK: A green technical nylon coat, worn over a black specialty jacket and white basel t-shirt, and teamed with black shorts, white pull-up socks, grey high-top sneakers and a yellow necktie.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Trompe l’oeil and graphic prints on shirts as a nod to the show’s overarching theme, tactical retention belts, paper feel jackets and coats, pink and yellow neckties, and a video installation created by Masafumi Kashi. Models breaking into spontaneous break-dancing episodes after walking the runway, followed by a streetstyle dance-off after the show.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “My head is sweating it’s so hot in here – I can’t believe how crazy-good the dancers are to be able to perform in 100 percent humidity!”
COLOR WHEEL: Ochre yellow, bottle green, navy, black, cream, beige, charcoal, magenta, taupe, lime.
