INSPIRED BY: The notion of Afro-futurism and the vibrancy of West African youth culture in the 70’s, designer Taofeek Abijako cited jazz cult-icon Sun Ra and American funk music collective Parliament-Funkadelic as key influences behind his “Genesis” offering.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Think Miguel and his entourage kicking back after an intimate concert in the basement club of the Edition Miami on a balmy Saturday evening on the opening night of Art Basel.
WEAR IT TO: A screening of the 1972 sci-fi film Space is the Place at (le) poisson rouge on Bleeker Street in Greenwich Village for a live performance of the movie’s score by Blue Note jazz, soul and drum’n’bass artist Jose James.
FIRST READ: Logo tees and long-sleeve shirts, flared trousers and color-blocked looks with a distinct Western vibe combined to create a minimalist collection with a strong resort aesthetic carrying a wearable quality for the warmer months.
BEST LOOK: A sage and white striped jacket, worn with lavender drawstring shorts and styled with pulled-up socks and white normcore sneakers.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: The Nigerian-born designer toyed with a Woodstock-inspired color palette for his debut runway show, staged under the Groupe distribution umbrella formed by Seize sur Vingt’s James and Gwendolyn Jurney.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “The all-black getup reminds me of a sexy matador or someone I’d like to be surprised by on my next Tinder date.”
COLOR WHEEL: Brown, powder blue, black, tangerine, sage, mauve, navy.
