Hellessy NYFW S/S20 – Review

INSPIRED BY: Nicaraguan-born socialite turned human rights activist Bianca Jagger, the reigning queen of Studio 54. Designer Sylvie Millstein cited the muse as a key influence behind her creative process this season, which resulted in a polished, Londoner-on-vacation collection in a mashup of prints befitting of rock’n’roll royalty.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Kate Moss at the cocktail reception following a book signing event promoting her latest style tome at Soho House 76 Dean Street in London.
WEAR IT TO: Stay at the Byblos Hotel in St. Tropez before heading for a night on the dance floor to indulge in the glitz, glamour and Cristal-spraying at its infamous Caves du Roy nightclub.
FIRST READ: Drapey party gowns in floral prints, statement separates capable of being styled multiple ways, and Millstein’s signature take on menswear suiting combined to create a vibrant lineup suited to standing out on a sultry summer night. Plays on proportion and experimenting with silhouettes were key: think a corseted poplin top with balloon sleeves, a strapless yellow tunic with hidden sleeves, and a one-shoulder silk top with a ruffled sleeve and tie accent on the side.
BEST LOOK: A white asymmetrical top covered in a red floral print with a puffed sleeve, teamed with cuffed boyfriend jeans and a draped panel hanging from the front pocket, worn with fishnet socks and fuzzy mustard slides. Other standouts included a printed maxi dress in watermelon and maroon, with oversized sleeves and a silk tie accent; and a double-breasted blazer with a detachable hem, styled with cropped leggings.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Chain belts with pearl detail attached to jean loopholes, Courtney Love-esque printed sheer tights, mismatched drop earrings, and leather boots with a plaid, fringed tongue.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “The last time I came to Buddakan was when my parents were in town three years ago and it felt like checking into JFK.”
