Helmut Lang NYFW F/W19 – Review

INSPIRED BY: Designer team Mark Thomas and Thomas Cawson paid homage to the brand’s 90’s playbook through a series of polished looks that focused on smart tailoring and the minimalist aesthetic that the brand’s renown for. Think the sort of getup Gisele Bündchen might have thrown on back in the day before dashing to a casting call.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Ciara’s lead stylist composing the dream wardrobe for the cover of the singer’s upcoming new album, filled with devotional jams dedicated to Russell Wilson.
WEAR IT TO: Flex your chops as a serious gallery curator as you rub shoulders with the crème de la crème of London’s art scene at the annual Tate Britain Summer Party.
FIRST READ: A series of utilitarian looks in the form of leather camis and trousers, sheer white shirts with side buckle detail, and the brand’s signature white tanks paired with cigarette pants. By paring things back, Thomas and Cawson reminded guests of the brand’s enormous impact on modern suiting: pairing t-shirts with tuxedo jackets and finishing off the undone look with cream western boots.
BEST LOOK: A red midi coat, worn with matching trousers and over a white shirt featuring a silver leather stripe.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Silver separates giving a pop to monochrome looks in the form of patent flats, metallic pants and pasted across sheer tops.
SPOTTED IN THE FROW:  Joey Bada$$, Mick Slime James, Steven Kolb, Walter Harvin, Selah Louise Marley, Tommy Genesis, Dev Hynes.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “This is my first time at a Helmut Lang show – is Alexander Wang showing this season?”
COLOR WHEEL: Black, white, red, silver, gold, pink, blush, gray, navy.
