Attaboy – The Lowdown:
A significant amount of strategic legwork was required when compiling one’s outfit before attempting to woo the folks at Milk & Honey to let you past the notoriously difficult front door. Hat or no hat? Heels or sneakers? Hoody or mini dress? Not so at its chilled replacement, mixologist mecca Attaboy. Opened in 2013 by two former bartenders from the aforementioned hipster darling – Sam Ross and Michael McIlroy – Attabooy sits below the hellish Orchard Street mess of fraternity bros and the drunken sorority sisters on their arms on Eldridge. It has no menu or reservation system, and Japanese cherry blossoms, flickering candles and low-hanging exposed-filament bulbs create an intimate, vintage speakeasy vibe for those in search of a handcrafted cocktail on a Saturday night out.
Guests are encouraged to request a concoction based on their preferred liquor or flavor of choice, and handwritten checks are hidden in faded old books, contributing to the prohibition-era atmosphere. Try to coordinate your visit on an “Only the Classics” night for a fresh take on old favorites. Unlike its more pretentious peers, the bartenders at Attaboy love a good challenge, making it the perfect venue at which to request a spicy margarita hot enough to make your cry.
