J. Mendel F/W 2018 – Review
INSPIRED BY: Staged in the garden at upscale Parisian bakery Ladurée in Soho, designer Gilles Mendel cited Katharine Hepburn and Louise Brooks as two of the strong, confident women as part of the influence behind his latest collection, which he said was created for those taking the road less traveled.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Rashida Jones on a solo writing expedition through Moscow on the Trans-Siberian Railway.
WEAR IT TO: Dashing through the streets of Paris in the snow in search of a late-night speakeasy after attending the Grand Masked Ball at Château de Versailles.
FIRST READ: Mendel stayed true to the brand’s signature aesthetic via a suite of embellished dresses, tiered cocktail gowns and petticoat-style ballerina frocks, while an array of patchwork fur coats and mink cover-ups provided the perfect addition to any winter red-carpet look.
BEST LOOK: An off-the-shoulder tiered tulle cocktail dress in peach and rust, worn with snakeskin heels and slicked-back hair.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Statement coats and minks paid subtle homage to the sort of getup Kate Middleton might don at an awards gala, while the collection’s muted color palette gave the show a grown-up, regal vibe.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE:Â “Have you tried the macaroons here? Do you think we get some for free on the way out?”
COLOR WHEEL:Â Dusty pink, apricot, maroon, white, mustard, navy, red, black, yellow.
