J. Mendel NYFW S/S19 – Review
INSPIRED BY: The 1970’s – specifically memories of hearing Saturday Night Fever at a club in Chicago upon moving to the U.S., designer Gilles Mendel paid homage to the Impressionist paintings of Claude Monet via the soft pastel palette of his latest collection.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Taylor Swift reenacting the final scenes of Sex & the City’s “An American Girl in Paris (Part Deux)” for her upcoming single about her latest breakup with a celebrity she’s since dubbed “Mr. Big.”
WEAR IT TO: The VIP section on the debut show of the New York City Ballet’s annual performance of the Nutcracker at the Lincoln Center.
FIRST READ: It was hard not to be smitten by Mendel’s latest collection, which featured ruffled tulle dresses and column cocktail gowns in sugary pastels, while sheer coats in a rain-drop print and a sprinkling of shorter options ensured the collection would cater to all events – prom, gala, the red carpet, or anytime one wants to feel like a Disney princess.
BEST LOOK: A strapless sorbet yellow party frock with a sweetheart neckline a layered chiffon ruffles.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Fur vests added a luxe vibe to floor-grazing gowns in complementary pastel hues, while a stole draped over one shoulder and cinched at the waist gave a 70’s feel to a look styled with wide-leg pants.
COLOR WHEEL: Lemon sorbet, mint, apricot, lavender, cantaloupe, teal, powder blue, camel.
