J. Mendel S/S 2018 – Review
INSPIRED BY: The fierce independence and spirited personalities of American icons, Katharine Hepburn and Lauren Bacall, while the audacious works of French avant-garde painter Francis Picabia also influenced the poetic collection.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Daisy Buchanan dodging the sly advances of Jay Gatsby at a private party on the Upper West Side.
WEAR IT TO: An impromptu jazz party at gothic revival-style private social club Player’s in Gramercy Park.
FIRST READ: Fur stoles and coats, column evening gowns, frilly tasseled flapper dresses and lace shawls rounded out the ladylike collection, while column frocks and sequined blouses added a dose of luxe to the mix. The designer used mannequins instead of models for a fresh take on the traditional presentation style, and the skylight behind the presentation gave way to a view of the Freedom Tower.
BEST LOOK: A strappy tiered floor-length gown in candy apple, worn with a red and pink long stole.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Floral applique on sheer frocks and a grown-up polka-dot print gave the show a fun and flirty vibe. Think Blair Waldorf having high tea at The Ritz.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “Do you know if The Standard is hosting its fashion week scavenger hunt again this year? One of the items last season was a selfie from the front and back row and a broken stiletto.”
COLOR WHEEL: Pink, red, camel, white, sea-foam blue, black, peach, brown.
