Jenny Packham SS18 – Review
INSPIRED BY: The whimsical minimalism of Asian gardens and the imagery created by artists who cite them as their muse. Think the gradient two-toned works of Lee Ufan and the woodblock print by Japanese artist Housai, The Great Wave.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Winona Ryder belting out The Shoop Shoop Song as Cher’s character Mrs.Flax in a remake of the 90’s hit, Mermaids.
WEAR IT TO: Rub shoulders with Prince Albert and Princess Charlene at the Inaugural Monte Carlo Gala for the Global Ocean at the Monaco Garnier Opera on the French Riviera while supporting the pursuit of clean water in your cerulean Louboutins.
FIRST READ: Off-the-shoulder party frocks, embellished mini dresses and a plunging jumpsuit with sequin detail stayed in check with the designer’s focus on delivering red carpet-ready showstoppers, while tiered gowns with tulle layering, sheer fitted looks with hand-sewn embroidered beading, and a 70’s-style glittery long-sleeve dress in silver and blue gave off a youthful nighttime vibe.
BEST LOOK: A V-neck floor-grazing gown featuring cascading, mermaid-inspired sequins that transitioned from lime to green to aqua to deep blue. Another standout was a strapless powder blue tiered ballgown featuring calligraphy-style white brush strokes.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Asanoha, or hemp leaf, patterned beading on a strapless floor-length and a long-sleeve mini dress, referencing a motif often seen on Japanese kimono, paired with gold heels featuring an oversized raffia pompom. A maroon column dress featuring Japanese Bendento buildings, oriental florals and duck motifs, playing to the collection’s overarching botanical theme.
COLOR WHEEL: Lime, red, powder blue, navy, gold, powder pink, white, green, azure, forest green, cream, olive, purple, maroon.
