John Paul Ataker S/S 2018 – Review

INSPIRED BY: The ancient methods of fisherman in the Black Sea Region that hugs the Turkish coast – think wicker quilting, sailing ropes, and the work of the silversmiths of the Empire of Trebizond. Designer Numan Ataker dedicated the show to the victims of the Chernobyl nuclear environmental disaster, closing with a song by Kazim Koyuncu.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Avril Lavigne supporting a friend’s gallery show in her Ontario home town of Greater Napanee after a day of fly fishing with her older brother.
WEAR IT TO: Bask in the sun aboard the Ms. Prinsendam cruise ship as you depart Fort Lauderdale before making a classic Atlantic crossing en route to exploring the exotic West African ports of Dakar, Senegal and Casablanca. Or your designated getup while taking a dip in Reykjavik’s Blue Lagoon, before retoxing with a signature Friki-Tiki cocktail post-bath.
FIRST READ: Tailored waistcoats, bolero jackets, and rope crop tops were reimagined using ancient techniques from the region, while Hollywood-style white capes, tiered dresses and floaty tulle layered gowns catered to the brand’s feminine aesthetic.
BEST LOOK: A voluminous black organza dress with concertina layers and a fanned neckline, cinched at the waist with a roped belt. Also key was an off-the-shoulder midi gown, featuring a silver bodice and matching print on the underside of the floor-grazing train.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Karlie Kloss in a strapless white dress, worn under a sheer chiffon cape with silver fringe detailing. Vernacular-knitting and knotting techniques featured on belts, tops and necklines.
