Jonathan Cohen NYFW S/S20 – Review

INSPIRED BY: Memories of designer Jonathan Cohen’s childhood in Mexico City and California, while he also paid homage to the colorful Mexican serape blanket through several designs in the collection, with a focus on inclusion and breaking-down borders.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Greta Gerwig taking a break from creating Oscar-nominated films to showcase her collage and sculpture works at Art Basel in Miami.
WEAR IT TO: Peruse the museums, galleries and local attractions of Mexico City’s dynamic art scene while completing a group residency program living and working at Casa Lü.
FIRST READ: Cohen’s message this season was clear from the opening look, which featured a deconstructed American flag emblazoned with a striped rainbow print. What transpired after was a series of ladylike frocks and a slew of tribal-inspired pieces: think chunky knits in primary colors, tapestry midi skirts with woolen fringing, strapless column gowns with flower and bird embroidery, and patchwork scarf-tie gowns connected by silk bows.
BEST LOOK: A navy shift dress with a deconstructed drop waist (featuring the same silk-tie detail), covered in different sized marble embellishments that resembled desert gemstones and rock minerals.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: The show’s location – a functioning artist’s loft – played to the artisanal vibe to the collection, as did the beaded Teva Velcro sandals, jagged imperfections in hand-knitted shawls, and hand-crafted statement earrings.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “I’m feeling very inspired to revive my painting hobby right now.”
COLOR WHEEL: Navy, red, pink, black, white, yellow, blue, brown, rust, mustard, aqua, cream, green, slate, orange, silver.
