Khaite NYFW S/S20 – Review

INSPIRED BY: As in previous seasons, designer Catherine Holstein looked to the American Southwest in crafting her latest collection, but this time, she cited the summers she spent as a child at her grandparent’s home in Woodstock, V.T., as key, sparked by a visit to the spot and noticing its sense of timelessness. Centered around a mound of stacked wooden chairs, the show played out to the adoration of editors and brand devotees that trekked to Brooklyn to witness Holstein’s evolution.

WEAR IT TO: Play dress-up in the New York City Ballet’s costume archives before taking a front-row seat at the annual premier of The Nutcracker.
FIRST READ: Holstein turned-up the sartorial volume this season by adding a haute couture layer to her beloved suite of denim and daywear separates. The vibe? A mix of English rose, Flowers in the Attic, and Vivienne Westwood’s uptown goth. The show opened with floral prints on silk pants, fringed suede jackets, sheer lace dresses with tiered tulle skirts in earthy tones, followed by poplin bodycon dresses in a gingham print, chunky knits, and bralettes styled with bohemian blouses and pull-up shorts.
BEST LOOK: A black drop-waist party frock featuring puffed sleeves and layered blush tulle, which peeked out the bottom of the skirt. Also key was a white blazer with a red lapel, worn open over a shirt linked with a sole button at the bust, teamed with black trousers and a cream cross-body bag.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Crystal hair pieces as part of a collaboration with Swarovski, suede day bags and matching Grecian slides, sparkling embellishments on princess gowns, and Western detail on jackets.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “It feels like there’s double the amount of people here this season, or maybe I’m just hungover.”
